2021.12.04 04:30 morgandawn6 Book Rec: Boldly Writing: A Trek Fan and Fanfiction History 1967-1987
Kindle version is still available for $4
One of the Amazon reviews nails is:
" I thought I had or had read every book out there about fanfiction until I attended a panel at DragonCon 2018 about female STAR TREK fans and this book was mentioned. I ordered it practically when the panel was over.
Don't expect academic erudition (like Henry Jenkins and Camille Bacon-Smith, who wrote the seminal fanfiction studies TEXTUAL POACHERS and ENTERPRISING WOMEN, respectively) or examination of individual stories like THE FANFICTION READER, or a great big overview like FIC. This is a cut-and-dried narrative by Verba, who, through her own collection and collections of others tried to list as many of the STAR TREK zines before 1987 (when Usenet reared its head and stories began to be posted online instead of on paper) as possible. As much as possible, she points out significant things about the zines, like it was the first issue, or the first photocopied issue versus mimeographed issue, or the first appearance of a certain storyline ("Night of the Twin Moons" being solely Sarek and Amanda tales, for instance), or perhaps at what convention a zine first appeared. She also mentions her own stories being published, or any fannish experiences she had. Letterzines and fan feuds are also discussed.
If you have any interest in the history of STAR TREK fanfic or even fanfiction in general, I would grab a copy of this book. Despite the often pedestrian writing, it was full of interesting facts and tidbits about the fic and the fans. "

Red Hat Enterprise Linux
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, which is powered by the Linux kernel 2.6.18, is here. It was announced for Red Hat's PartnerWorld conference. That's been going on in France, and the final version of the new operating system has just been released.
Here's the short story: The operating system contains some improvements, especially for server administrators. A new version of the installer is included. This new installer can now recognize if your system is a thin client (i.e. doesn't have a display) and if so, the desktop isn't installed. Instead, the system uses a web browser to start services and login.
Additionally, new and old commands for system administration are added. This allows more control over the distribution, including user authentication and management, and remote software installations.
New features and enhancements of course include bug fixes. For example, there is a way to fix the issue in which a computer boots with blank screens due to problems with the new version of the kernel. Red Hat Enterprise Linux has a fix for this problem that is included in the new release.
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 has one feature that is unique. It uses hardware based virtualization called KVM. It allows you to turn your physical servers into virtual servers. It's not the typical hypervisor because it uses hardware emulation for virtualization. This allows you to run multiple virtual servers on one physical server. It's the first product to use this technology on the Red Hat Enterprise Linux platform.
If you want to try out Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, you can download the system right now. I'm using the version that's available on the download site for Fedora. The link is available here.
As for the future, there is a lot of excitement over the new kernel. Linux 3.2.3 is out and will be included with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6. It's already available for Fedora, but it's still in testing.

Debian GNU/Linux 8.7Textsynth
GNU/Linux 8.7 (codenamed 'Debian Buster') is the first Debian release to be designated as a Long Term Support (LTS) release, meaning it will receive long-term security updates for five years. Released in March 2019, it is a version of Debian Linux based on the Debian GNU/Linux 8.6 release. It is also the first version of Debian to adopt GCC 8.2 as its default compiler.
In preparation for the release, Debian released a new version of the unstable distribution, codenamed "Sid", in early 2019. Buster is based on Sid; it had also been the default release in the stable distribution prior to Buster's release. The new version of Sid introduced a number of changes which would make it a development version of the new LTS release. This included removal of systemd, replacement of "systemd-logind" with "logind", removal of "consolekit", replacing "plymouth" with "libvirt-bin" for graphical boot scripts, removal of "gnupg", "gnutls-cli", and "curl", and many more. The new "systemd-login", along with the new init system "systemd", was the cause of a great deal of consternation and controversy. After several days of deliberation, the release team decided that the transition would proceed as planned, even though Sid had been released to the public for testing.
The initial beta release, codenamed "Wheezy" in the Debian world, was made available to testers for the first time in January 2019. Final release of Buster occurred in March 2019. Debian 8.7 has been available for the general public since early April 2019.
Debian 8.7 features 4,743 packages, with packages being in the distribution's main component, Debian's GNU software. The Debian project provides Debian's users with Debian software, a curated, free and open-source operating system, a Debian-based distribution designed to work perfectly well with GNU software. Debian's default kernel is Linux. The current packages in Debian 8.7 are taken from the "jessie" distribution, a Debian-based distribution featuring a 2.6.32 Linux kernel.
