2021.12.02 12:19 One_Relationship6441 Equivalent Definitions of the Measure of an Angle

We define an angle as the region between two rays with a common vertex, but we define the measure of an angle differently. The modern way we tend to do this is by considering an arbitrary circle centered at the vertex of the two rays. From there we define the measure of an angle θ=s/r where s is the arc length bound by the rays and the circle and r is the radius of the circle. Furthermore, we say that the area of a sector of a circle A’=π(r2)(θ/2π). We interpret this as the area of a sector is some fraction of the area of the circle.
Alternatively, we can define the measure of an angle theta by saying A’/A=θ/2π where A’ is the area of the sector bound by an arbitrary circle centered at the vertex and the rays and A is the area of the entire circle. (Serge Lang does this in Basic Mathematics. For an angle in degrees he changes the 2π to 360 degrees. After all, the number is arbitrary. This definition is just saying that the measure of an angle is the ratio of the area of the sector to the area of the entire circle, which is arbitrary. We could just as easily have left out any scaling factor and left the angle as a number between 0 and 1. In this case 0 would be 0 rad, 1 would be 2π rad, etc.)
With the first definition, we also say that the area of a sector A’=A(θ/2π). This is exactly the same relationship outlined in the other definition of an angle. The area of a sector is the area of the circle times some angle. I have never seen a proof of this intuitive fact, however. Assuming the first definition, how do we deduce this relationship?
My second question is involved in both definitions. Either one requires that the measure of the angle in question is independent of the circle you draw. For the first definition, s/r is constant no matter the circle, in the other, (A’/A)2π is constant.
Finally, are these two definitions equivalent, and what does that really mean ? How does one prove that two definitions are equivalent?

2021.12.02 12:19 SaxManSteve Here's how Ottawa has failed its residents (credit to @alexthepuffin)

  1. It starts with council approving the Second Ave parking garage to appease the local BIA. It’s a waste of money and rarely used. And it just adds cars to a residential neighbourhood.
  2. Then the mayor and council heralded Lansdowne. Eight years in, we’ve lost money and the trees have died. They promised something better than a parking lot, but it turned out to be pretty much a parking lot.
  3. They declared a climate emergency, then decided to build a bunch of roads. AVTC, Terry Fox, Hunt Club West, Coburn… all going through valuable natural lands, and enabling sprawl. The money could have been spent on sustainable transportation, but they chose driving instead.
  4. As a whole, council seems fine with crappy bike infrastructure. When the Booth St bridge was built, they ‘forgot' the bike lane. Rideau St turned into Bike Frogger. We now know that bike projects will be watered down. The city worked hard to find ways to maintain revert reds.
  5. And then the urban boundary extension. Council is only looking at their term’s budget. The perpetual costs to support yet more sprawl will be devastating. Taggart popped some champaign the day Tewin was approved, happy their campaign donations had paid off.
  6. Transit use has been declining for years. The response is to increase fares. LRT was a year late and unreliable. Fudging technical studies is accepted. The transit goals are never about getting people out of cars. Avoiding an inquiry is a coverup.
  7. The design of LRT is terrible. The stations are unheated, some are smelly, and not near enough to where people live or work. If council had chosen engineers (and the transit commissioner) who actually took the bus, we might have had something better.
  8. There’s a whole slew of small things that each make the city just a bit shittier… when pavers are displaced, it's fixed with a splotch of asphalt. Stairs are closed in winter. Pedestrian beg buttons are usual. Ottawans don’t pee in winter, apparently.
  9. We are told we need to stay within a budget, yet police always get more money. Somehow, the mayor can find $10M in the couch, but can't fund community housing properly.
  10. The location of the Civic Hospital destroys natural space, but at least the parking garage has a beautiful view of the canal! The LRT station is slightly too far to make transit attractive.
  11. Anyone who disagrees with the mayor is dismissed, muted, ignored or made to feel inferior. Women are treated particularly badly. BLM protestors are akin to anti-vaxers. And don’t forget the KNIVES thing.
  12. The fuck-you attitude to urban councillors cannot be ignored. Watson carefully stacks committees so urban councillors cannot effectively object to major decisions, like budgets, planning or transportation. Suburban councillors don’t care if downtown turns into a traffic sewer.
  13. The mayor pulls this all off by having just enough suburban and rural councillors that he gets whatever he wants. A $2M gift to a luxury car dealership? Done. Keeping bikes off Elgin? Easy.
  14. Here's the most devastating part to me: we're all getting used to this.

2021.12.02 12:19 ULuganda Do you think that Everlasting Moonglow should be F2P weapon that's obtainable through event?

After knowing how Cinnabar Spindle only works on Albedo, and we are okay with it, I wonder how Everlasting Moonglow would be, if it is obtainable like Cinnabar.
EM only works on Kokomi, and maybe Barbara. The passive is not even better than Prototype Amber. Sure the base attack is higher, but Kokomi and Barbara as healer don't need that much base attack to begin with. 10% Healing Bonus is not even that great, and 300 additional normal attack is stupidly weird.
I do use it on Kokomi, but damn, even with Ocean Hued Clam the damage is comparable with TTDoS. I don't know, I just still pissed on how Mihoyo handles everything Kokomi related.

2021.12.02 12:19 cheekymarxist CIA Files Say Staffers Committed Sex Crimes Involving Children. They Weren’t Prosecuted.

One employee had sexual contact with a 2-year-old and a 6-year-old. He was fired. A second employee purchased three sexually explicit videos of young girls, filmed by their mothers. He resigned. A third employee estimated that he had viewed up to 1,400 sexually abusive images of children while on agency assignments. The records do not say what action, if any, the CIA took against him. A contractor who arranged for sex with an undercover FBI agent posing as a child had his contract revoked.

Hey, is there any blockchain/DeFi tech community in Banglore that mainly discuss technology and the perspective of its implications? Its Ok even if some discussions happen from a price action/trading perspective, but am also looking to connect with people who believe in the future in this tech.

2021.12.02 12:19 Only1OfMany New(ish) DM weighing the consequences of player choices.

For background:
Playing Lost Mine of Phandelver (LMoP) with a small party (3 players) of varying experience. I have been playing 5E for about 2 years, and a DM for under 1 yr. I’ll keep things relatively vague as to not spoil the adventure too much for anyone who still hasn’t had a chance to play it, and enjoys the unknown.
The scenario:
Running Cragmaw Hideout earlier this week. Having explored most of the structure, the players had struck a deal with a Goblin to secure the safety of a hostage. Conditional on the death of the final boss, the hostage would be spared. The Goblins were rolling well and 2/3 of the players were below half health coming up to the final boss. They entered initiative, decided to flee, and managed to escape the hideout taking minimal damage (cave flooded during their escape).
The issue:
In fleeing, the players essentially abandoned the hostage in the caves, with a hostile creature, who made a deal with the players. The deal was not followed through. The players seemed pleasantly surprised that they could retreat and take a rest. Now that they’re outside and have (so far as they know) successfully fled – they are hoping to take a LONG rest.
My initial thoughts are, “you can do anything in D&D – but what you do has consequences”. Yes, you can flee, but what will that mean for your hostage? What can your enemies do with 8 hours of time to prepare for your arrival? What happens to the would-be usurper who wanted the final boss dead?
As of now, I think it would be more realistic / increase verisimilitude if the usurper and his allies were killed as mutineers/traitors, and the hostage kept more securely in the “highest room of the tallest tower”, so to speak. I think that the boss would have had time to call for aid or reinforcements, though, they may not arrive yet. I want to be sure to avoid “DM vs Player” mentality here, but I also feel that the players need to feel the consequences of their actions.
What are some options that you might use?
